I spend about 30 mins a day maximum consuming political content. If I read about 11 horrible people on Facebook, but you read about 12, do you care more? Is that a measure? If I read 30 headlines in 10 minutes every morning, but you only get around to 15, does that mean I care more because I've consumed more news? How do you measure how much someone cares? Is it how much they post online? Is it the work they do in the community? Running for office? Donating money? In fact, I would argue consumption of modern media in the vast quantities many people do is not conducive to mental health. There is neither need nor obligation to engage in politics all day everyday in all things. Not being invested in the daily social media slap fights and mainstream media that exist to stoke anxieties to attract clicks and ratings does not mean someone does not care about the well-being of others. Realizing that it's a game on their side, albeit a deadly one in practice, has helped me cope with their apparent insanity, their inability to realize just what their end game will lead to. It's helped me cope with Murdoch and his formerly unassailable position as he split families, ended friendship, and tried to foment civil war. For one thing, it's the way I've stayed sane through Nixon, Reagan, Dubya, and TFG, all of them appalling crooks and jerks who moved this country closer to fascism. I'm just delighted the northern part of this state has gotten progressively bluer over the time I've been here, especially once we got 100% paper ballots after the clumsy 2004 election theft.īut I retain the blurred line between politics and sport that I found in Boston. And, at the risk of being chided for throw back, WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER! Never forget it!ĭO NOT SHUT UP! CHEER UP! GET UP! WAKE UP! AND STAND UP!Īfter the Marathon bombing, there was a guy interviewed who said "Boston is a tough town People care about three things: politics, sports, and revenge." Yep, that about sums it up. We MUST NOT be fearful of learning about each others' concerns, history, desires, and talents. In short, it will take all the "wokeness" we can muster and master. It is going to take honesty and competence from women and men of multiple ethnicities, multiple genders, multiple sexualities, multiple religions including non-religious persons, and multiple cultures. And that help and stability is NOT going to come from straight, white, "Christian" men alone. We have also learned that our institutions are not designed to nor will they save us from the tyrants unless we take a stronger stand for honest, competent citizens at the helm. A lot of us have learned that killing off the "good" in pursuit of the "perfect" is not a winning nor wise strategy. Now most people see how their lives are affected by corruption and greed. long time ago, way before HRC was a candidate. The only satisfaction I have is that our time on this world will end but the Earth will go on and hopefully whomever takes over after us will be better at life than we are.īeen saying this since I first joined DU. The saddest part? I know how the world works and I know that none of this ends well for anyone. It pains me greatly but I am literally powerless to do anything about it which frustrates me even more. I am getting on the older side so this all almost over for me but I am bitter and sad for the world I'm leaving my kids and nieces and nephews. They secured a permanent majority there because even if a large majority votes Dem, they still win control no matter what. I mean they essentially shut Democrats out of Wisconsin politics permanently. They control the majority of state legislatures and other local government seats. The Republican base is not small or insignificant. It won't end even if trump gets arrested and convicted, which I find as likely as me becoming a millionaire. I honestly don't see a path forward anymore. I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted and I can't turn it off because the world won't let me. I'm not sure how we reconcile the differences and I think it's a fantasy to think any of this is going away. To be honest I don't see a path to "better". But this is all getting worse, not better.
